J

I am trying to install a full version of Windows XP onto
my new pc that now has Windows 2000 Pro. I keep getting
the message: Setup was unable to read from or write to
drive C. If a virus scanner is runnig, disable it then
restart setup." My Windows Xp is NOT a UPGRADE!

I haven't any virus programs yet on new pc, just a few
games.

I was told to turn pc off and boot up from CD, well F8,
ESC and press any key is NOT responding, Windows 2000 Pro
just boots up and runs as it should except I DON'T WANT
IT TO! Errrr.

May I please get some help as how to get 2000 OFF my pc
and install Xp please please?

NOTE: I do NOT have a problem with losing any information
on my new pc. There are no files on the pc that can not
be replaced.

Thank you=)

You were correctly advised re. booting from the XP CD. Check the boot
order in your BIOS. It sounds like it is set for hard drive before CD.

Only Windows XP Professional can upgrade over Windows 2000.
In order to install Windows XP Home Edition, you'll have to perform
a "clean install" as follows:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

===> Accessing Motherboard BIOS
===> http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.
==> http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/default.aspx

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

It removes the MBR? I don't think so.

Instead of following Carey's foolish advice, get the diskette(s) from your
hard drive's manufacturer's web site and use them and write zeros to your
hard drive to get rid of the Master Boot Record along with everything else
on your hard drive so that it is truly "clean". Use the full format. This
will take hours. Then set up your partitions, choosing 4kb for the clusters
if the software lets you. Then go into the bios (hit the Del key whilst
booting up) and set your computer to boot from your cd rom, insert your XP
CD and you're off to the races. Once you've set up XP, go back to the bios
and change your boot order back.

At start up it won't let me into BIOS is the 2nd problem.
I press "ANY KEY" as it says yet Windows starts up
anyways. I tried F8, still windows starts. At a loss.
Thank you for all your help!.

What says to press "any key"? I've never seen a BIOS
like that. Usually to get into the BIOS you press
something specific like F2 or DEL and typically there's
about a 1 second window where you're allowed to do that.
If you don't press anything, it boots. Watch the screen
for instructions or check the computer documentation for
the proper key.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Only you know what motherboard and BIOS you have, so only you know
the answer to your question. ;-}

In the extremely unlikely event that your PC's manual or the
motherboard manufacturer's web site doesn't contain the needed
information, try one or more of the following:

Completely unnecessary. The WinXP installation CD does contain
all of the necessary tools, and the normal installation routine, if
properly executed, _will_ replace the MBR with the correct
information. Rather than denigrating someone else's correct advice,
why do you spend a little time learning how to maintin an OS about
which you're willing to offer irrelevant advice?

It's not my fault that you can't follow what I say. Replacing and erasing
are two different things but, hey, it's your computer, do what you want.
When I want a "clean" install, I clean the hard drive by writing zeros all
over it. You put XP on top. Whatever floats your boat.

Replacing and erasing are two different things

"Erasing" on a disk is just replacing. You said that
yourself in your earlier post: "use them and write zeros
to your hard drive" If replacing twice makes you
comfortable, that's cool but it doesn't mean other people
are "foolish".

The CIA and DOD don't consider a disk "clean" until it
has been overwritten MANY times with random data but
that's for the security of the old data. If the new data
won't stick after one write, it's time to replace the
drive.

Be practical. The CIA and DOD will never see your computer. For all practical
purposes formatting a disc is enough.

That's what I was saying. Once is enough (not "foolish"
as Alias suggested). Twice is overkill for most people.
But if you're really paranoid, twice isn't enough anyway,
so once makes a lot of sense for many people, and 40
times makes sense for a few, but there's not a lot of
need for numbers in-between.

Be that as it may, MS won't let you make 4kb clusters and the diskettes
will.

Using the Windows XP CD to reformat a drive NTFS will always
result in a 4k cluster size. Where did you get your erroneous information
from?

Windows XP utilizes a default 4k cluster size, which is optimum,
when performing a "clean install" using NTFS.

Set BIOS to boot the CD before HD. This is in the machine's BIOS
setup, and the key is *not* normally F8 - that is the windows boot menu,
later on. The usual key is DEL or maybe F2 - hit immediately after
switching on. Boot the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the
license agreement take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where,
hit ESC; select and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one
to be formatted at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one - or argue with the
2000 that is there.
