Installing Downloaded Updates

In the past, after downloading windows updates and defender updates, I would
be prompted by the icon in my systray to install the downloaded updates. More
recently, and too frequently, the updates get downloaded but I never get
prompted to install them. I only see the prompt to install when I go to the
Turn Off Computer command on the Start Menu to put my PC on Standby. There, I
see that in order to install the updates I must TURN OFF my computer. What
happened to my choice to install after the downloads finish? I discovered, if
I restart my computer one or two days in a row, THEN the prompt to install
moves to my systray the next day. Does this sound right? Can someone tell me
if there is a way to get the prompt back into my systray immediately after
the dowmloads complete? Thanks

That happens to me from time to time on my laptop, which I've configured
for notification only so I can manually download the fixes when I have
the time.

Sometimes it offers to install after download, sometimes not.

If I start "Microsoft Update", it will pretend to download the update
again and then offer to install it.

One other thing: After doing the pretend download, the notification icon
will reappear in the systray.

If you allow the Update process to finish the install, the icon will
disappear. I don't know what would happen if you tried to have both
install processes run at the same time; probably nothing good.

I started experiencing this awhile back and raised it on one forum or another. Not much to do, but use Start > MS Update and let the yellow shields sort themselves out, which they do. Now I just preempt the process and download the updates on the day they become available.

I tried that. While downloading/updating from WU, the icon in the
systray re-appears (as you said). I activated it, and it was clever
enough to know another update process was under way.
It gave a message saying "updates cannot being installed now". and ended.
Meanwhile the updates in WU finished normally
