Installing BCM 2003 on Vista PC

A

Alan Watson

After overcoming more problems than I could ever have imagined, I now have
BCM 2003 SP4 installed on my newish Vista PC. But when I open Outlook, even
running as administrator, the Startup Wizard fails either to convert the
existing database or create a new one.

This looks like a problem of the Wizard not having sufficient rights, but
having already started Outlook as administrator, I am not sure what else to
do. I can see the BCM database using SQL Server Management Studio and can't
see anything that should stop it working. What can I do?

Raul,

Thanks for your interest. If I try to use the existing database, the process
stops apparently during the backup phase, giving me the error message
'Database migration was unsuccessful'. If I try to create a new database, the
process stops immediately with the error message 'Database creation was
unsuccessful'.

I should add that I can happily go into SQL Server Management Studio Express
and back up the BCM database or create new databases, and that the upgrade
wizard is plainly looking at the right instance of SQL server
(ALAN-PC\MSSMLBIZ) and can see the database (MSBusinessContactManager).

I am really at a loss. I wonder whether there is any risk that, although I
have opened Outlook as administrator, the upgrade wizard is trying to log on
as some other user. If so, a) what user might this be so that I can make sure
it has the rights it needs or b) can I open the wizard directly as
administrator to get around the problem. Alternatively, can I avoid the
wizard altogether and do the various tasks one at a time? If so, how?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sql Server 2005 doesn't run as administrator, as earlier version did,
but as builtin user Network Services. The issue is probably that user
Network Services doesn't have permissions to write files to the BCM
folder, C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Business Contact
Manager

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately the wizard still fails with the same
error messages, although apparently now when starting to migrate the database.

When I checked, the network service user had read and write access to this
folder, but not access to modify or execute. I gave if full access to the
folder and also checked access to the individual files and the temporary
sub-folder.

As I said, the wizard is still failing, so I would still be grateful for
more help.

Try this. Turn on BCM logging, in the About dialog.

Try the wizard again, and check the LOG for details of the error. I
think the log file is in folder %TEMP%.

I do not understand. Until I can successfully run the wizard I do not have a
working version of BCM - eg no BCM toolbar in Outlook. Neither the wizard
itself itself has an 'about' dialogue or a BCM logging option.

Luther,

Thank you for this information. I do not have the 'about business contact
manager' dialogue but entered the registry key manually and now have the log
file.

It is rather long and complicated. I am not sure I have properly understood
it but I can see:

1. that at least one problem in trying to upgrade the database is that it
(my current database) does not contain the stored procedure
MSBusinessContactManager.dbo.ir_CheckIfDBShared
It has a great many other stored procedures, but not this one.

2. In trying to create a new database at least one of the reasons for the
process failing appears to be that it is looking for two scripts that do not
exist, notably:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Small Business\Business Contact
Manager\\db_localized_script.sql and
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Small Business\Business Contact
Manager\\db_neutral_script.sql

As I say there is lots more in the file. I would obviously be happy to mail
it to you if that would help.

Thanks again

The interesting part of the logs are the errors at the moment when
Setup wizard fails.

Regarding the errors when trying to create a new db, not have those
SQL scripts can be fixed. They should have been installed by BCM
setup.

Run regedit.exe and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
\
search for "Business Contact Manager". Its hive/folder is probably
{B32C4059-6E7A-41EF-AD20-56DF1872B923}.

Look for the UninstallString value. It's data should be something
like:
MsiExec.exe /X{B32C4059-6E7A-41EF-AD20-56DF1872B923}
Run that command with a /I instead of /X. That should repair your
installation and replace the missing Sql files.
