Installing a DVD writer ??

T

Tim

I am installing a new Lite-On 811s DVD writer and I wasn't sure if I
need to use the supplied audio cable to connect to the sound card. I
have an existing CD-RW drive also installed which has an audio cable
connected to what appears to be the sound card's only audio input. The
documentation for the DVD writer just says that connecting the audio
cable is optional. So far I have the IDE and power cables attached.
Also, I am very new to this whole thing so if I am overlooking
anything else please let me know. Any info on the audio cable issue
will be greatly appreciated.

I am installing the DVD writer on the secondary IDE as the master with
my CD-RW as the slave. My sound card is a Soundblaster Live!
Value(Dell OEM). I am running Windows XP Home on a Dell Dimension 4300
1.8Ghz P4 with 256Mb RAM.

Thanks

the sound card should have a AUX input. No sound cable
connedted, no sound from the drive.

Deceide which drive you want sound from and connect that
cable to the card or go to a computer shop and ge a
splitter.

You do not need to connect the DVD-R to the sound card unless you are going
to use it to play audio CD's. You can continue to play them on your regular
CD-ROM if you like.
Most of the Add On sound cards have a cd input and Aux input. If you have an
Aux input on your sound card you can plug the DVD-R into it.

The sound will work without the audio cable!! Newer DVD/CD drives do not
process the audio directly thru the sound cable but sends it digitally thru
the ATA/IDE connection, by default.
