Installer was in a loop again with update 1.14.1361.6 (KB915597)

The Windows update icon kept appearing no matter how many times I installed
the above update .

I did the usual:

Start>run>Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

Answer yes to the window that asks "Do you really want to delete this
file?". Check for updates and Defender should update to the latest
definition file.

Any chance that this problem will be fixed? Questions about it are all over
the Microsoft site.

You might try what I did to
get updates to work correctly. Download the Windows Install Clean Up utility
from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301.
Uninstall Windows Defender using the Control Panel Add/Remove software
window. Run the Windows Install Clean Up utility and remove Windows Defender
(If listed) and Windows Defender Signatures. Reboot and reinstall Windows
Defender, but do not take the check for updates choice from the install.
Instead run Windows Defender and select "About Windows Defender" from the
Help menu and use the "Check for Updates" button from the "About Widows
Defender" window. It took me several misfires before I came to this solution.
I have seen a cautionary note about using the clean up utility that said you
might not receive Microsoft Office updates until a new update comes out. If
you have Microsoft Office I would suggest you make sure you have all the
updates before you try this procedure. I haven't had any auto-update
problems since.

About all I can say is that this clearly hasn't gone away yet.

I'm still hoping it will, though.

Your problem with windows update hasn't gone away yet??? Long story to my
other problems, but since I had to reinstall winxp to restore some lost
systems files of my own, I had to install a fresh copy of Windows defender,
meaning I uninstalled, installed all my updates and sp2...etc. Then, I
installed Windows defender again. Now, I don't recommend that Windows needs
to be reinstalled, but I suggest try uninstalling Windows defender
completely. Then install and get the most current version of the updates. It
comes with a new engine. I'm surprised it didn't work yet for everyone... let
me know how it turns out if you didn't get the automatic update to work for
defender.

However, one thing I noticed with this version of the update, it didn't loop
for me, but when I installed, it originally displayed a failure installation
directly after download. HOWEVER, when I looked in both Event Viewers of the
System and the Apps, neither detected an error message. They both said
successful! I also looked in the program help menu, and the program
successfully updated with this new version:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0
Signature Version: 1.14.1361.6

An extra note however in System Events shows a possible config problem:

Event ID: 5007

Windows Defender Configuration has changed. If this is an unexpected event
you should review the settings as this may be the result of malware.
Old value: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Signature
Updates\SignatureLocation = C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition
Updates\{66B2C56D-7B28-4A58-92B3-1E4D3304E53B}
New value: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Signature
Updates\SignatureLocation = C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition
Updates\{CA367E2E-0C25-498E-8F5A-C506FC190AA4}

And the previous message also event id 5007:

Windows Defender Configuration has changed. If this is an unexpected event
you should review the settings as this may be the result of malware.
Old value: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Signature
Updates\ASSignatureVersion = 1.14.1353.2
New value: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Signature
Updates\ASSignatureVersion = 1.14.1361.6

Why it gave me a failure during an installation update yet no error
displayed in event viewer is beyond my understanding unless I wrote the
code... although it says it was updated, I still question it. All of the
labels commit that they were updated. In between the two above, the commit
event was displayed as:

Windows Defender signature version has been updated.
Current Signature Version: 1.14.1361.6
Previous Signature Version: 1.14.1353.2
Update Source: Scheduled
Signature Type: AntiSpyware
Update Type: Full
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Current Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0
Previous Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0

What else goes behind the scenes will remain a mystery...I hope it was
successful. The update is no longer there. If anyone else recognizes the same
failure yet successful installation...!?!, please post if you went through
this version installation manually through Microsoft Updates...so we can keep
track that there is more than one time of this type...Tks!
