installer starts with Word 2003 unless /a switch is used

Every time I start Word 2003 the Windows installer starts, displays for about
5 seconds, and about 15 seconds later Word starts without intervention on my
part. If I start Word with the /a switch it starts in about 2 seconds without
displaying the installer. I have tried deleting the normal.dot file,
repairing Word, using the Installation repair tool and then reinstalling
Office, all without solving the problem. The other office apps all start
fine. I do not have any other templates or add-ins installed.
