installation - scsi controller

hey - i got a computer from my dad's office and i want to put windows xp on it - when i started the installation it said i would have to remove "highpoint hpt366 Ultra DMA controller" (a scsi controller on this computer)
does anyone know if this will mess up my computer if i remove the scsi controller (i don't know what an scsi controller does)

The scsi controller is a piece of software for your hard disk. If you can't install WinXP without removing this driver, I'd recommend you do it. No harm done: you can always download it from the www -

Is it software or hardware. I'm getting the same error message. I did some google searches and found it associated with the abit motherboards. I had one of those several years ago, but replaced it with an asus.

Still, I found the Highpoint HPT366 Ultra DMA Controller in the program list (in setup add/remove programs). Tried to uninstall but it said it was missing a particular .dll file. I downloaded the file and put it where it should be. Uninstall still didn't work. So I manually removed all the associated files and deleted it in regedit, but I'm still getting the problem.

Any ideas how to fix it?
