Installation of SP2 with Prescott CPUs

Does anyone know if the post-SP2 install bootup failure which we have been
discussing recently leaves the computer in such an unfortunate state that
image restore programs such as
Ghost, DriveImage, or TrueImage are unable to restore earlier C drive
images, even from floppy or CD boot?

Well Ghost runs from DOS, so you would need a bootable CD/floppy with
Ghost on it and your OS partition backup image(s) on another partition
or CD/DVD.

All that will work fine.

The much simplier workaround is to rename update.sys and the SP2 will run
just fine.
Flash the very latest mobo BIOS.

I have used Ghost (many times) for this problem, before I knew the reason
why the box died when installing SP2, and it works fine. The simple way
round the problem, until a good bios is released for your motherboard, is
install SP2, take the option to reboot later (not now!), rename the
update.sys file, then reboot the machine. It will work just fine. When you
get a bios which gives you a good level of Precott microcode level, flash
the bios, boot XP, remane the update.sys file back, and then reboot. I found
that I never needed to boot from install cd's or the like - ever! There are
numerous threads which explain the update.sys problem in this newsgroup.
