Installation Error

Hi, I'm new to XP (Home ed) and trying to install old
programs (mainly games), I encounter the message:

16 bit Windows Subsystem

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose close to terminate the application.

This is the same whether installing from autorun or
manually via setup file. I'd appreciate help, cheers.

Peter, note that this problem can be caused by a trojan installing a
file windupdater.exe and creating registry entries for that file.

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:
