Installation Blocking Issue: Microsoft Shared Fax Client

T

Tom Phillips

I'm trying to install an upgrade from ME to XP, and am
blocked from doing so; I'm told to uninstall a program
called Microsoft Shared Fax Client using the Add/Remove
Programs in the Control Panel; but it's not there! And
I've searched my computer for it, and can't find it; I did
a search for text of same, and found a WIN386.SWP 20 MB
file, of unknown date of creation, and a config.dmp file
created recently - deleted them both. I tried to install
XP again, and got the same blocking issue warning. Please,
does anyone know where Microsoft Shared Fax Client is?
- Thanking you, from Tom Phillips

Open up My Computer.
Go to Tools, Folder Options.
Put a check in "Show hidden files and folders".
Click on Start, then Run.
Type in: CMD.
Type in: cd\ , then hit enter
Type in: dir fxsclnt.exe /s
Remember what directory you found the file in.
Type in Exit.
Double click on My Computer.
Right-click on the C: drive and click on Explorer.
Find the directory that housed the fxsclnt.exe.
Delete the file and restart.

Now, you should be able to upgrade to Windows XP.

Dear Carey Frisch,
Thank you immensely! I couldn't find CMD, but did a search for
the file you suggested - deleted it - and then could install XP. (I'd
stumped countless people and a few computer newsgroups with this
problem).
