install windows media format

G

George Valkov

I want to be able to play wma files, so I need to have the Windows Media
Format installed.

Does anyone know how to install it on Windows 2008 server? I use the
Datacenter suit, Full installation. Is WMF avalable in the Standard or
Enterprise suits or is it removed from there too?

I cannot install Windows Media Player too, but I don't care about Media
Player, because I use JetAudio 7 and the latest version of FFDSHOW. I can
play WAV, AVI, MP3 and MP4 files, includding video, but I cannot play WMA
and WMV.

note:
DirectX Agust 2007 is installed.

1. Open the Server Manager
2. Scroll down to the Features Summary and go to Add Features
3. Now tick the following:

Desktop Experience
Quality Windows Audio Video Experience

4. Now hit install (a reboot is required after the installation)
5. After the following have been installed go to Personalization - Theme and
look for Aero.msstyles
(eg. C:/WINDOWS/Resources/Themes)
6. Finally go to the Window Colour and Apperence and open the classic
apperence properties and Windows Aero should be listed select it and apply
and ok.
7 Now you should have Aero Glass and other Media applications like Windows
Media Player 11, Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Sidebar etc.

Cheers! Who would have thought that the Datacenter Server is such a good
multimedia solution! Even the cute balloon screensaver is there! :)

Thank You Andre, for the help! You did save me a lot of time!
Everything worked exactly by Your plan.

PS:
Whenever I install an operating system (Windows, Linux, etc...), my first
task is to bring up the multimedia features... Then I can continue with the
rest of the tasks, testing and learning in peace! :)

I need to test this out, but my Server 2008 RC0 ISO is corrupted, need to
download again. Glad everything is in order for you. :)

I have a 2k3 ent. retail on one partition, so I formatted the other from
there. Then I extracted the ISO to a partition on the second physical disk.
I ran setup from within windows, told it to use drivers for the SCSI
controller and 30 minutes later I logged on to Windows 2008 :) No DVD or
floppy disks needed.

Setup is very fast, windows is very fast and manageable.

I remember during the Vista RC 1 and RC2, it took hours to install from DVD
(and that is on a PX-760A recorder as reader). Then Vista decided not to
listen to what I say, but to do what it wants instead... It was also too
clumsy (something like my friend's laptop, but worse - read the next
paragraph), even after disabling a lot of services, so I removed it with
pleasure.

I week ago I used the laptop of a friend of mine... The CPU clock is nearly
the same as my PC's (mine is over-clocked to reach her CPU clock). Mine is
32 bit, her is dual core 64 bit, but with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. 1 GB
RAM vs. 1 GB RAM. Her is supposed to be faster, because of the new dual core
processor, instead it lags - sometimes up to a few seconds before opening an
explorer window or another program, or command. Mine always reacts
instantly.

Windows 2008 server seems improved on the first sight (compared to Vista).
