Install VMWare in Vista

I purchased a new laptop that came with the Vista Business OS. I would like
to install VMWare 5.0 on this machine. However, I keep getting the following
error: "This VMware product is not supported for this Windows operating
system. Please install this product on one of the supported Windows
operating systems". Has anyone been able to find I way to install this
software.

this means vmware is not going to work at all in vista. it's not compatible.

I've got VMWare 5.5.3 Build-34685 running on Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit -
runs perfectly fine. Haven't tried Vista as a guest OS, but as a host it
works.

Memory usage isn't so great on Vista and I'm not too happy about that - I
used to be able to run 2 VMs easily before on that host that has 2GB of RAM,
but that was with Win2k3 as a host OS. With Vista I definitely won't be able
to do that with some major swapping. Even with ReadyBoost used, the box
swallows 1GB off the bat after startup.

But so, yeah... Get the latest VMWare version - no matter the warnings, it
works perfectly.

Unlike the other poster, I was unsuccessfull at getting VMWare 5.5.xxx to
install on Vista Ultimate. I downloaded the VMWare 6 beta from the VMWare
site and have been using it for a couple of months without issue.

Yes, I was running the same Vmware 5.5.3 Build-34685 on Vista64 Ultimate as
below with 2gb ram, for a couple of months. At present I'm running
VMware-workstation-6.0.0-44426 (release candidate). Its available here free
with registration, but dunno how much longer till the full release kills it
off. http://www.vmware.com/wsbeta
