Install older version of IE over current version ?

Win98 (orig) plus updates
IE 6.0.2800.1106 SP1; Q828750; Q330994;
Q313829; Q827057;
Q826940; Q824145;

Ever since I upgraded to IE6, performance has been erratic
and dismal. IE hangs sometimes when a link is clicked on
(sometimes not); can click STOP and then sometimes can
go back to the previous page on a site (sometimes not);
can click on the SEARCH button and maybe get the search
engine to open on the left side of the screen (other times,
page not found).

Previous version used was 5.5 with SP2 and really had
no problems. Just want to get back to 5.5 without losing
all the FAVORITES links, saved OE MAIL, and other
pertinent info.

I religiously use/run Ad-aware 6.0, SpyBot S&D,
BoClean (www.nsclean.com) , NAV (part of System Works
2002); AdShield (http://www.allstarss.com/store/index.html);
Cookie Pal (http://www.kburra.com/); ISS firewall(?)(formerly
BlackIce Defender)( www.ISS.net ).

Have executed the possible remedies as referenced in KB
article 281679 with no improvement noted.

Any help is appreciated in getting IE 6 straightened out;
otherwise , I need to go back to 5.5.

Thanks

You may be able to return to your *previous* IE version
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293907) but I doubt it'd help with your
spyware problem.

Have you ever sought updated reference files for Ad-Aware? You should,
before every use, even "right out of the box". Otherwise you're wasting
your time...and even Ad-Aware/Spybot/etc. can't snag everything.

I highly recommend using HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip) to identify and
assist in the removal of these bad guys. **Post your files to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

**ALL** software listed is kept updated daily !!(and run also).

Have run HiJack This also with nothing of note found.

If it is a spyware problem, then it has to something new and
really insidious as it is not picked up by any currently used
software. Have even run keystroke/data logging prevention
software.

Just tried again and this time, when clicking on the IE desktop
icon, the screen went totally BLACK and never recovered.

Had done an IE "repair" ; obviously, that wasn't the thing to do !!

I highly recommend using HijackThis
Let the experts in the forum take a look at your HijackThis results, Ray.

Meanwhile, temporarily disable NSW, AdShield, CookiePal and the firewall to
see if doing so helps at all.[/QUOTE]

Deactivated everything of a "protective" nature via --msconfig-- and
rebooted. Had no problems with sites.

It's getting late for me so I will tackle it tomorrow and add -1- program
back at a time to see which one, or possibly combination of, program(s)
is/are at fault.

Thanks

PA Bear...

Well, I reactivated, one by one, each of the programs which
I had disabled. And the result ???.......now there is no problem
with IE freezing/hanging. Why, I have no idea.

What ever....thanks for the hand holding.

FYI- I had upgraded to IE6 and started experiencing some very odd
and annoying errors in the displaying of some WebPages, especially
those using a lot of bells and whistles, which would result in anything
from bizarre displays to total system lockups. I'm running Win ME,
btw. So I successfully "downgraded" back to 5.5SP2, by uninstalling
v6 in the add/remove utility, after downloading the IE5.5 download/
install utility and placing that on the desktop, and running that after v6
was removed. Everything is running fine now, no more bizarre bugs.
Btw- I'm also running McAfee v7 and ZAP3, but don't believe the
bizarre phenomena was due to them, but to the fact that IE6 was
optimized for Win XP and they never really tested it thoroughly with
ME. Because ME is more similar to the 95/98 generation of Windows,
it's possible similar issues are at work there. HTH
