Install & Configure System Components

Windows 2000 Professional
I replaced the cooling fan on my Intel Pentium processor.
Now, each time during start-up, a message appears:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Windows 2000 Setup
Please go to the Control Panel to install and configure system components.
------------------------------------------------------------------
When I go there, no components are identified as requiring attention. I
looked into the "Intel Processor" item on the "System" list but there is
nothing listed about the fan.

How do I get that " go to the Control Panel" message screen to stop
appearing?

Thanks for the advice.

Nothing to do with your fan replacement.

Dave, thank you for the URL. I deleted autorun.inf from the folder it
specified, but the message "Please go to the Control panel..." still appears.
I've waited a few days to see if repeated shutdown/restart cycles would make
the deletion take effect, but the message still appears.

A search shows that autorun.inf is also :
in the ...Adaptec\Direct CD folder;
in the ....Hewlett-Packard\Memory disc\coregen;
in The Master Genealogist [genealogy software program] ...\viewer;
and in ...Documents and Settings\Recent

Should I delete all of those?

I removed all autorun.inf files from the computer, shut down, started...and
still got the screen to go to Contril Panel and configure components.
What should I try now?

Thanks, Dave. The cautions in that article about messing up the registry
make me believe I'd better just leave it alone and put up with the message
screen.

I really do appreciate your help and the time you've spent answering me.

OK but it won't hurt to at least look at the data in the (default) value
found at;
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\setup.exe

I used Registry Editor, selected the most basic folder, My Computer, clicked
on Edit>View and typed in HKLM.
It found one reference
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Components\Installed\DRM_DRM\CriticalTo\Registry\Default
In the Default was:
Type: REG_SZ
Data: HKLM, Software\Microsoft\Multimedia\Components\DRM\Reference
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I could not find the file you suggested:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\setup.exe

How do I find it?

Thanks. The problem is now apparent.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\setup.exe
shows :

(default)
Type REG_SZ
Data (value not set)

What should I set in there?
