instal more ram

I have a gigabyte motherboard currently with 2 No 512DDRPC3200 ram cards.
There are slots for 4 memory modules; the names quoted in the Gigabyte
installation guide are ddr1, ddr2, ddr3 and ddr4.
I have to-day installed a further 2 No 512 cards but the computer is still
just recognising 2 however a strange thing has happened; previously Belarc
advisor recorded them being in slots AO and A1 with A2 empty, now it is
recording them in slots A1 and A2 with AO empty; furthermore cpuz records
my total dram at 2048 MBytes so they seem to be installed OK.
I am told that the problem may rise with the "pairing" of the cards but have
not heard of this before. Obviously I can take them out and try re-arranging
them but it would be helpful if anyone knew of this "pairing" and if there
is a way I could recognise the positioniong before I take them out and
re-install.
Thank you.

Stewart, did you check to see how much Ram your Gigabyte Motherboard
supports? If you just installed two DDR PC3200 512MB ram modules and they
were not a set or paired but the two you have originally were paired or a
set then you may have problems. Go into the Bios and set the Ram timings to
Auto.

Thanks, I know that the motherboard can support up to 3Gb.
I shall try what you suggest.

I have now tried all permutations and believe that the extra ram I have been
given is DDR2 whereas I need DDR1. I shall just have to scout around and
see if I can get any at a reasonable price.
Thanks again.

Go here http://www.crucial.com/ and use the Memory Advisor. It will tell
you what type you need. You can also Google the part numbers on the RAM you
have to find out what type you already have.

Stewart, DDR2 Ram was so cheap for awhile I was tempted to buy some
for future use. There are Motherboards that take both kinds but they are
scarce. DDR2 and 3 are more common now.

I have now tried the Crucial download and find that they are selling 1Gb ram
for £31; they do not state that it is DDR1 but at that price I am fairly
certain it is. I get the same results from Kingston.
I changed the ram around in the computer a few times but stupidly did not
take a note of the part numbers on the functioning installed ram, nowhere
however did I see the words DDR1 or DDR2.
I have decided to go ahead and buy a strip of 1Gb DDR1 ram and if that
works then I shall get one more taking me to the maximum that my motherboard
can handle.
Thanks again.

Crucial does give detailed specs on the RAM they are willing to sell you
(and you could use that to buy anywhere really) - can you cut/paste them
here?

They'd have to have separate memory slots, I would think, since DDR has 184
pins and DDR2 240. And while DDR3 also has 240 pins, the alignment notch is
in a different location.

Tom, if I remember correctly that was the config of the MB. When DDR2
first came out there were a few boards that allowed
for both 1 & 2. Back then Ram was expensive and the thinking of some
Manufacturers I guess was to make their boards more
attractive by enabling both types of Ram. Though again my memory is
not that good but it was a very small window of opportunity.

Sorry to keep labouring this but the ram I tried had 184 pins and the
alignment notch is in the same position. I have the 2 of them lying on my
desk; they are 512MB DDR400 each but I am sure are DDR2 as they will not
work in my computer.
My computer is a gigabyte GA-7N400-L and crucial part Nos include the names
DDR PC2700 and also DDR PC3200.
As I said I shall go ahead and buy what I need and return the 2 spare to my
son (he gave them to me).

My pc gets very slow even though I have a 512 ram.I do know that it is
low but is there any other means that I could fast up my pc? My clock
speed is 2.6Ghz...

If they are 184 pins, they cannot be DDR2.

GM, 1/2G of Ram is fine for WinXP unless you are heavy into movie
editing etc. You may be infected with Malware. You can
check using Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware and Spyware Doctor.
The first two have free versions. The last one you can
use and it will provide a summary of the nasties it finds and a path
where you can find them. To have them removed automatically
will require the purchase of SD. Also, go to Start>Run type:
msconfig look in Startup. There may be many you can uncheck
if not needed at startup. Also, do a defrag of your hard drive.
