inserting mp3 in powerpoint

Hi. I have tried searching and reading through the suggestions but I can't
seem to find one that addresses my issue. I have PP 2003 on XP. I am trying
to make a photo slide show with music, however, my mp3 files will not play.
After I insert it, then try to play the music file to see if it works, I keep
getting this error message: "The specified file cannot be played on the
specified MCI device. The file may be corrupt, not in the correct
format,..." I tried searching the net, and even tried playing the mp3 file
in the Microsoft Media Player, but it says "Cannot determine the device type
from the given filename extension." Now I don't know what to do. I am a
novice at this and by no means a professional when troubleshooting my system.
I am desparate since I need to burn the finished copy onto a CD to be shown
at a birthday party for 100 people! =( Can someone please help me with
this?! Thank you.

The MP3 file was downloaded from the net originally as a torrent file. It is
Where did the MP3 file come from?

tried playing the mp3 file
in the Microsoft Media Player, but it says "Cannot determine the device
type
from the given filename extension."

That would indicate to me that either the file is not what it says it is,
(common with downloads) or the media player settings have been corrupted by
another application. Test the file on another windows machine and if it
plays in Media Player, then download and re-install Media Player on your
machine.

Here is some other stuff I tried too (after reading replies to other similar
issues): shortened the file name, placed MP3 file into same folder as
PowerPoint file, tried testing it in Windows Media Player v10 (it plays in
here). I even tried inserting MP3 files I ripped off one of my CDs, but
still no luck. I also checked the properties of the MP3 file itself, and it
indeed say "MP3 Audio" as the file type.

I don't have access to another Windows machine at this moment, but will try
and see if this works. Is the Microsoft Media Player download available off
their site? Can I just download it and install the player without removing
it first? Is it safe to just delete the file striaght from the 'system32'
folder?

Then I do suggest going ahead and reinstalling Windows Media Player. If
that doesn't do it holler back.

No, when you install it everything is automatic. Just download and install.

Thanks again Austin for the advice...I am searching on the microsoft site
right now... just to clarify, Microsoft Media Player & Windows Media Player
are 2 different programs right? My MP3 files play on the Windows Media
Player but not on the Microsoft Media Player (mplay32.exe).

As I'm searching on the microsoft site, I can't find the download as I
search...seems like it pulls up everything but the Microsoft Media Player!
Darn search engines!
