Inserting Function blanks adjoioning cell

Occasionally, when I want to insert a cell address for a cell that is
immediately to the left of the one I am trying to put a formula in,
inserting the '=' sign blanks out both the cell I'm working on and the one
to the left. Of course, there are workarounds, but is there a way to not
have to 'work around' this problem?

Maybe I should add, often the cell in question is from another page, which
can make its address rather long.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you could also turn off "Edit
directly in cell" in the Options.
