Inserting active Check Boxes in Word 2007

I want to insert an "active" Check Box where a click will "insert" an "X' or
"Checkmark" into a Word 2007 document ( within a Table ). Research indicated
that I needed Legacy Tools and then to Protect the document. The option is
only available for Filling Forms but I want the user to be able to enter text
in other areas of the table.
There MUST be an easier way to do this!!

You need to insert section breaks to cordon off the parts you want to be
protected/unprotected. Once the document contains more than one section, the
Protect Document task pane will give you the option to select which sections
you want to protect.

This is by no means obvious, especially if you have been using the padlock
button on the Forms toolbar to protect the form. I believe once you've
protected specific sections using the Protect Document task pane, then you
can revert to using the Lock button, but you do have to go through the task
pane at least once to establish which sections are protected.
