Inserting a picture into an e-mail and keeping it there

G

Guest

I inserted pictures into an e-mail. All looks good. But when I send the mail, Outlook removes the picture(s) from the e-mail and makes them attachments. The e-mail shows the text without the inserted picture(s). In Outlook Express, the sent e-mails arrive with the picture(s) still in the body of the e-mail. How do I do this in Outlook?

Outlook (not OE) previously DID show pictures in-line in
HTML-formatted emails.

Somehow, it has stopped doing this recently -- I wonder
if possibly due to an update I have innocently accepted.

This was useful and I'd like to get it back if possible.

Any ideas ? Thanks, Phil

were the images embedded or attached? They need to be embedded.

I am the original one who wrote this question. The pictures were not attachments but imbedded in my original e-mail. Outlook removes these pictures from my letter and converts them into attachments which is unacceptable. Each picture must then be opened, one at a time, and is then out of context with my letter. I have tried sending this mail several times with the same result. In Outlook Express (a free program), this does not happen and the e-mail arrives at it's destination in the form that it was sent (with pictures in place). If Outlook was designed this way, it is a BIG mistake, a mistake I hope will be corrected.

Something is wrong because when outlook sends html and the images are
embedded in the html (using insert, picture which enters html tags into the
body (<img src=[contentid]>), the images remain embedded in the html. It's
hard to say what is going wrong - is the message arriving as HTML?

Hi Diane & a2thdrlr,)

a2thdrlr: I'm not trying to hijack your post, just
trying to get an answer - I asked same Q 25june04 (qv).

Yep, I really mean embedded, by Insert Picture - so you
can see them in-line when sending and when received.

I think the only things that have changed since it worked
are ...
a) I stopped some services (to try improve
performance) but these restarted again automatically upon
reboot anyway so I think didn't have any lasting effect.

b) I accepted Windows updates - maybe some
security/other update has taken away that
functionality ?(

Can you help at all ... PLEASE Thanks, Phil )

I just noticed, no. It arrives Plain Text format. I checked in Outlook Tools/Options/Mail Format and I am set-up as HTML. Why is it changing to Plain Text after I send it? That's why my pictures become attachments, I guess. Again, if I now send that same e-mail in Outlook Express, the images remain embedded. What is not working in Outlook? HELP!!

Diane, one added note to last reply. As I am new to Outlook I didn't notice this before but all my e-mails are arriving as Plain Text rather then the HTML format that most of were sent as. Again, I seem to be set-up for HTML as I described in my earlier reply this morning. Now I'm really confused!

Your HTML settings have no bearing on incoming mail - the sender makes the
decision to send html or plain text.

Your HTML setting control what is sent as new messages. In addition, some
contact can be set for plain text only - after their address resolves double
click it and see if it says plain text. if the contact form opens, click on
the email addy in the contact form to see the format.

I am not sure if we are moving away from my original question or towards
discovery of a bigger problem. What I have discovered is that you are part
right, Diane. As long as the sender IS NOT me, they can elect to send mail
in HTML format. I have received some HTML e-mails. But I do not seem
capable of sending an HTML e-mail. I did an experiment. I forwarded an
existing HTML e-mail from my hotmail account to my main, Verizon account,
another existing HTML e-mail from my Verizon account back to myself (same
address), another one from Verizon to hotmail, and one from Verizon to my
wife (also Verizon). All 4 e-mails converted to Plain Text on arrival.

Ok... so you can recieve html but not send it.
1) you are composing in html? Not Rich text or plain text and think it's
HTML? the title bar of the message form should say the format
2) go to tools, options, mail format, internet format button. Verify it's on
HTML. This covers you if you are using Rich text
3) open a contact form - double click on the email address on the form. OR -
type an address in the to field and double click on it after it's
underlined. You'll see a dialog that should say let outlook choose the best
format.

I had checked all of those things previously. They are set as you have suggested. Diane, I really appreciate your sticking with me and trying to help with this problem. I certainly have become frustrated, I am a first time user of Office and this is a challenging introduction. I sure hope I have not brought you a problem you can't solve!
I have read in other posts that people seem unable to send e-mail in Outlook with embedded pictures; they become attachments as mine do. Is this a related problem?

it sounds like it might be the same problem, but I'm not sure of the cause.

Diane, I am sorry that you were unable to solve this problem but I appreciate your attempts. Can you suggest who I should "talk" to? As a new user of this program I am VERY unhappy that there is seemingly no way that I can use Outlook to send my mail without it converting to this horrible Plain Text format! If you are still with me, please give me this one last bit of help. Thanks again....

Yes, Mike, I am. But this doesn't seem to be the problem. I just tried to
sent an e-mail to myself after stopping Word as the editor. It left Outlook
in the html format. In my sent folder, it is html. But it arrived back to me
as plain text! I did find that if I type a document in word and e-mail it
directly from word, it arrives at the receipient in html format. I send the
exact same document, copied into an e-mail and send it via Outlook and it
turns to plain text. If I send it using Outlook Express, it arrives in html.
I checked all my settings and confirmed them with Diane P., my settings are
listed in the 7/22 post. No good! HELP, Mike!!! Jerry
