'Insert' to get into BIOS?

My buddy is telling me that he read somewhere that some MOBOs allow
use of the insert key (hold it down) during boot to get into BIOS.

I can't find any info on this. Anyone know if it is true?

Thanks

Could be. For my system, the del key gets me into the bios.
Just look in your mb manual, or got to the mb mfg website to find out what
gets you into the bios.
Be careful in there if you are not familiar with it, don't want to change
anything that might render your system unable to boot.

Many MB makers user DELETE to get into the BIOS - but this isn't anything
you can depend on. Compaq uses F10, other makers use other keys.

I remember, long long ago, that holding INS while booting would reset the
BIOS to default settings in case the user messed the settings up. Not sure
how many systems still use that these days.

What's your real question? That your buddy can read something
*somewhere*? What is it that YOU need to do in the BIOS? Is your
question how YOU can get into YOUR computer's BIOS?

Usually it's delete, or one of the <F(n)> keys like <F1> on
OEMs. However, when all else fails just poke away till you
find the key that works... but i'd try <Del> first.

Insert usally deletes all saved settings in the CMOS, the system probably
enters the BIOS as an ancouragement to set thnigs up correctly after
clearing.

My mobo: Delete to get into BIOS, Insert to boot at a 'safe' FSB setting and
get into BIOS. Handy for when you set an OC that is too high and the machine
won't boot, easier than opening the case and using the 'clear CMOS' jumper
and loosing all your other settings.

Of course. Along with other "weird" combinations such as Esc, F1, F2, F10,
Ctrl-Esc, Alt-Esc, Ctrl-Alt-Esc, Ctrl-Alt-Enter etc.

As other posters have mentioned, there are several keys and key
combinations used by various manufacturers to access the BIOS
settings.

A useful tip that was given to me by a computer repair guy may be
worth noting (I had been unable to access the BIOS of one machine
after trying every key combination I could think of).

He told me to disconnect the floppy drive, then start the
computer. Sure enough, an error message came up indicating a
failure to detect the floppy drive followed by something like
"press key X to access BIOS settings" (can't remember what key X
was, but the trick resulted in the machine telling me how to get
into the BIOS).

Cheers,

John S
