Insert page number

Dear all,

I have a document which starts with several pages eg title page, index etc
prior to body of the document. I want to number my pages with Insert / Page
number so that eg the 4th page of my document will say page 1, the 5th page
will say page 2 etc. How do I tell MS Word '07 to start numbering at eg the
4th page ie the body of the document and not at the first (title) page??

thank you

You need to insert a section break at the end of that part of the document
that will not have pages numbered.

I don't know what version of Word you're using, but I find I have more
control of the page numbers if I insert them from within the footer itself,
rather than using the Insert menu. If you're using Word 2003 or earlier, just
open the footer (or header) and a "Headers and Footers" toolbar will open.
Place your cursor where you want the page number to be and click on the Page
Number icon.

I hope this helps.

Sorry I meant to say I am using Word 2003. Is there something to indicate
where a section break is in a document? I am using page layout / break /
section break / next page but l can't see any indication of a section break
and when I do the numbering it just numbers the first page as 1, as usual :(

If you click on the ¶ button in your "Standard" toolbar, you should see the
section break as a wide dotted line. (kind of like this:
:::::::::SectionBreak::::::::::)

Insert that break at the point where unnumbered pages end and numbering
should begin. Then click in the footer area (or go to View - Header and
Footer). The "Headers and Footers" toolbar should open. Make sure that the
"Link to Previous" icon is NOT clicked. If it is selected, click it again to
toggle it off.

Then you can use the "Insert Page Number" icon to insert your page number.
If you want it to start with some number other than 1, click on the "Format
Page Number" icon. That will open a window that will allow you to start the
page numbering at something other than 1 if needed.

You can also refer to

information.

I hope this helps.

Ok I can see the section break but when I then try to number the pages it
just numbers the first page as page 1, as if there were no section break. :(

You have to use Format Page Number to "Start at 1" in Section 2. You must
also unlink Section 2 from Section 1 and delete the PAGE field in Section 1.

inserted the section break?
