Insert item and object options are grayed out

My laptop version of Outlook 2003 has the buttons for item and object grayed
out in all areas (Task, Contacts, Calendar, etc.). I assume this is a setting
that I haven't found. My desktop allows me to insert file, item, or object,
but I cannot do this on the laptop. Word is not enabled as my email editor.

What am I missing?

Make sure the cursor is in the body of the message and not in the To,
Subject, etc... field

Still not working. I am a fairly geeky guy, so I have tried the obvious,
including detect and repair. No success. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
