Insert an audio file

I'm working in Word 2007 on a pc and I want to insert an audio file in the
document. Is this possible? If so, what format does the file need to be in?
And how do I go about inserting the file? Which tools do I use?

you can insert, for instance, a WMA file as an object (Insert | Text |
Object, from file, ...). The file format must be something that your
system has an application able (and registred with the OS) to play, I'd
say.

PS: ... but don't expect your printer to whistle the tune when you print
such a document ... ;-)

This is helpful. If I put the document with the inserted audio file on a
server, I guess anyone who wants to hear the audio file needs to have the
audio-listening application, too. Do you know if there's any limit to the
number of audio files you can add to a document? Or if there's a limit to the
size of the audio file?

sizes of OLE objects do not count towards any limit in file size [see
1], so basically, the fitness of the workstations used to open the files
is the prime thing to consider.

OTOH, I would need very good reason to insert even a single Audio file
into a Word document, let alone dozens or more. Word has never been a
good "wrapper" application, and I'd need a very good reason not simply
putting the media files directly on a server ...
