"INF was written for Win95 or later" error message

My Win XP Pro Svc Pack 2 PC recognizes my USB external storage devices (thumb drives, card readers, floppy drive, external hard drive, etc.)
but the devices will not install. Instead I get an error message, "the driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry.
This may be because the INF was written for Win 95 or later". Other devices like my webcam, printer, mouse and keyboard
work fine in the same USB ports. The external storage devices should not require any device drivers with XP. There are many
postings on the internet regarding this error message but no solutions for devices that do not require drivers.

I spoke with tech support for some of the devices as well as AMD tech support and my mobo supplier.
No answers. Mobo bios and drivers are up to date.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Paul

<snip> look in your \inf folder for usbstor.inf

and see if the date is older than your other inf files...

it *might* somehow have gotten replaced...and if so...you can extract a new
copy from your XP cd
