INDIRECT function

I am trying to understand what the INDIRECT function means and its purpose.
I have looked on Excel's help facility and I don't quite understand the
explanation. Can anybody explain what this function is used for/have any
examples, or know of a website that shows demonstrations etc?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply, however, I still can't seem to find the answer.
There are lots of threads on this site regarding problems people are
experiencing with the INDIRECT function but nothing actually explaining what
it is. Do you know of any more sites that will actually describe the function
itself in more detail?
