Indexing Service, does it lock files?

I have a situation that I've never encountered before.........

I sometimes transfer large files across a network (ex. 4gig ISO) and use
a verification tool to check for corruption(SFV Checker).......When I
try to create the SFV it tells me the file is locked and does not
verify. A different version of SFV checker will actually create the SFV
but when I place it on the other machine to check the file I just
tranfered it tells me the same thing, file locked or in use.

I've had other situations where I couldn't cut & move, delete, the
transfered file as it tells me it's in use? Only way to clear this is to
reboot the offending machines.

Maybe these 2 incidents are seperate from each other but is this because
of the actual indexing service in "Computer Management" or because the
drives are NTFS with the "indexing" option checked off? Or, does
indexing apply to the whole system or just isolated to NTFS?

It seems this problem occurs when I pull files from a NTFS partition
(would be the case with the 4gig ISO's) Larger files (not a single 4gig
file)equal in total size or more from a FAT32 drive transfered to
another machine this issue does not happen, I can create SFV's with no
problem. Oddly enough though if I tranfer a 350mb avi to store on
another machine than try & delete the original from another I get the
same error, file in use?

Anyway, if more info is needed I'll be happy to explain my
setup......Thanks for any interest and help.
