Indexing/Search functionality lost

I have lost functionality of Indexing Service on WinXP Home since
automatically installing the 2 updates from Win Update earlier this week
(Security Update and Malware removal tool?). I'm now receiving Error Event
4118 in the Event Viewer, which is a Ci error, "A content scan could not be
completed on directory C:". Microsoft KB article 273768 says to do a 'Full
Rescan' via the MMC. However, doing this simply generates another 4118
error, and is generated on any/all partitions and directories. The
consequence to me is that the Run/Search tool doesn't function, as it will
continuously run without generating any results at all. However, I finally
simply disabled the Indexing Service and search function will now work
(until indexing is re-enabled). Oh yes, I also discovered that System
Volume Information Directory contains 0 files and 0 bytes on all partitions,
and are not rebuilt or restored upon reboot. System Restore will not
complete on any RP prior to the updates. Any ideas?

I followed thru to the Full Rescan, which only generates additional 4118
errors. The System Volume Information folders are not rebuilding (which is
where the catalog.wci files are stored). I really don't know what triggered
this. I haven't seen any other postings of similar problems. For now, I
have Indexing Service off, and will continue to look into it. May even try
a Repair Install at some point.
