I have a SQL Server back end to a database with linked tables. Do I have to
assign and index in Access or will it use what I've already assigned in SQL
Server??

Queries against linked tables will send some (sometimes all) of the
processing to the server. Obviously the server will use the index during
processing as appropriate. Access is aware of the indexes that are
defined on the server, but can also make its own local indexes. Those
should not normally be necessary though.
