Incrementing a line no in a query or form

Hello,

There is a line number in a detail form for a list of an employee's
expenses. As far as I can see I cannot use the "auto" number feature as the
lines have to be numbered within the key field. Please excuse my ignorance,
as I am only recently able to spend time using Access for database
development. I am in the process of trying to become familiar with Access
2007, my previous experience being mostly with Access 2003. I would like to
be able to do this in both 2003 & 2007.

Is there some way of incrementing the line no from the previous record to
update same in the current record.

Apologies if this is not very clear.

Any help would be most appreciated.
