incremented filenames

When I open a worksheet a '1' is appended to the filename.
If I do a 'Save As' and remove the '1', the file does not
save but there are no error messages. This happens to
every worksheet both local and on the network. Since this
only started a few weeks ago and I do not use Excel very
often, I suspect I did something inadvertently but have no
idea what. Any ideas are welcome.

When you open a workbook named: myWorkbook.xls, what do you see in the title
bar?

does it look like:
myWorkbook1
(Without the extension (.xls))

Or does it look like:
myworkbook.xls:1

The second one means that you have more than one window open into that
workbook. You can just click on the window you don't want and hit ctrl-W (until
all those numbers are gone).

But that doesn't sound like your problem.

If it's more like the first, I'd try reregistering excel:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

But neither of these would explain the failure to save. I don't have a guess
for that.

It was the first situation that you describe and
the /regserver solution worked for clearing out the
extraneous '1' and for the failure to save. Thanks a lot.

I'm not sure if the reregistering fixed the save problem--maybe it was a
coincidence.

But glad you got it working.
