Incoming mails lost in Windows Mail

Steve Cochran

It was just reported in another thread that uninstalling AVG fixed their
issue with WinMail, so I would do what Gary suggested and uninstall the AVG
and see if that fixes the issue.

I deinstalled AVG, restarted my computer and retested sending the email that
repeatedly would never enter my inbox - even though Windows Mail said that
the messages had arrived!
But still the same problem.... the email count was correct but no email
appeared.

The filter (which I find fast) didnt find anything in the inbox folder,
unfortunately the filter doesnt work though in the main "local folder"!?
Pity.

I hope upgrading to Windows Live Mail is effortless and keeps the same
layout, subfolders and message rules as I currently have ... ???

As a test, I suggest you uninstall your antivirus. It's the only way to
rule it out as the culprit.

If no improvement, upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

Open WM to your Inbox>view menu>current view>click to disable "group
messages by conversation".
Alt, V, V, G.
Can you see those lost messages now?

Have you reinstalled AVG yet? It is important that you have AV software
installed.

Simply install it and so far into the installation you will be offered
Custom Install, choose that and deselect Mail scan.

After uninstalling the antivirus, remove your mail account (your messages
will not be affected), then close and reopen Winmail and then add your mail
account back again. Then try your test message. You might also log on to
the mail server and verify that the message made it to the server's inbox.

Yes, switching to Windows Live Mail is effortless since it automatically
imports all your WM accounts, settings, folders and emails.
Also, you can run both programs simultaneously if you want; I've
done so for the past three years.

Hi Mac,

Thanks for your interesting ideas. I disabled the read messages and the
message was not in the unread messages.

I actually installed Antivir, not AVG, but I used the standard installation.
So I may uninstall Antivir and reinstall AVG with the selection you
mentioned....

Hi Steve,

I dont see the sense in removing the mail account, since I do get messages
from this account except for onces containing certain text (which I dont
know of).
The mail server does show the messages as arrived, it is also logival
because the mail count of incoming mail is correct.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Gary,

I think this will be the most wisest way to continue....

Can you please send the direct link again so I am sure I do it the same way
to follow up?
Please also confirm that the rules and junkmail settings (aswell as all
other Windows Mail settings) are also saved before I go ahead.

Kind regards,
R. Burton

I know it doesn't seem logical, but if you recreate the accounts as Steve
mentioned, that sometimes "resets" something that is just a little "off" and
makes a difference in the messages showing up or not - despite the count.
Try it first, easiest option and nothing to lose.

Here's the link for WLM http://download.live.com/wlmail
I don't think it will import the rules or filters . . . but it does import
the accounts, messages, folders, and other settings as Gary mentioned.

The mail account is set up wrong by antivirus products. They often use a
proxy, so your mail account settings may be incorrect as setup by the
antivirus product. That is why I suggested the removal and then
re-establishment of the mail account. Otherwise the problem is not fixed.

Antivirus software often screws up the account settings, which is why it is
necessary sometimes to remove the account and then re-establish it manually
so the settings are correct. Norton and McAfee are notorious for this (see
point 3 here: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3) and other wanabee AV products
mimic them.

Ok i've found the culprit!
I found out now how to search the entire folders, in going to Edit - Search
Before I just used the filter and that was only valid for each specific
folder.

There was a word in the text that had a rule make it go into another folder.
I found all the dozens of re-tested emails in there ;-)

Thanks folks for your time and help... at least the antivir and AVG are not
to blame on this one.

Cheerio.

Yes, I believe it will import the rules and all settings.
If it turns out that Windows Live Mail doesn't meet your expectations,
simply uninstall it.

Hi, it is keri again,

I just was wondering if you had Google desktop installed on your Computer? This may be causing problems.....
Hi guys,

I am using ver. 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205).
I have just had a test done and noticed that on my webmail from my provider
there are 7 messages in the inbox. But when I download to Windows Mail, only
4 of the 7 actually come in!!?

Is there a known bug or something (e.g. problem with the junkfilter?)
There is no set rule from this sender and I have suspected since this
several weeks now, so I would have noticed if a rule had misplaced them. Is
there a logfile or something to look back on or a freeware tool I could
download for diagnostics?

This is my last resort, otherwise I'll have to download thunderbird and
neglect this unreliable Windows Mail programm...

Cheers, Burton

I'm glad you got it figured out.
