Inaccurate disk capacity

A

Adam Smith

Disk Management shows
Type Basic
Capacity 156328 Mb (correct size)
Unallocated 0 Mb

My Computer shows:
Name Type Total Size Free Space
Disk0_Vol1(D) Local Disk 24.6 Gb 9.53 Gb

Not possible to extend the partition or add a new one from Disk
Management. How can I correct this, so the full capacity of the drive is
usable.

Thanks.

You have to make the distinction between "Disk" and "Drive".

The Disk is the thing you buy. In your case it has a capacity
of 156 GBytes.

A disk can have several partitions, each accommodating a
Drive, e.g. drive C: , drive D: etc.

If you look carefully in Disk Management then you will probably
find that you have unallocated space. This is where your missing
capacity is. You now have several options:
- Create new partitions and drives in the unallocated space.
- Use a partition manager (e.g. Acronis Disk Director) to
expand the size of your existing partition.
- Repartition, reformat and reload Windows and all applications.

If you select the third option then you must back up all your
data files first.
