INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE

J

Jerry Scott

I get the BSoD INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE after I changed
the hard drive with a good hard drive out of another
machine (broken). I need to do this because it has all his
documents etc on it and configured how he (boss) wants it.
I change the drive, it boots to the Windows 2000 logo
screen, hesitates then I get the blue screen of death.
Stop 0X0000007B
It doesn't seem to recognize the drive even though it
booted fine in the other machine. It boots fine with the
original drive. I tried a recover and it found the windows
directory and went through verification of all the files,
but when I go back to reboot, ... crash. HELP??

Greetings --

Normally, unless the new motherboard is virtually identical to the
old one (same chipset, IDE controllers, etc), you'll most likely need
to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at the
very least (and don't forget to reinstall any service packs and
subsequent hot fixes):

Normally an in-place upgrade can not be done from an integrated install
CD-Rom.

| This is a good article... but what if the HD contains win2000sp2 which
| has been upgraded to sp4 online, but one's only win2000 install CD
| (the bootable one) is win2000sp2?

I recently replaced a non-working MBoard with an identical
good one. 'Puter ran fine for a couple of weeks...now W2K
won't fully boot. Get no command prompts anywhere, even
in safe mode. Is this related somehow to what you folks
are discussing?
