Inability to select several elements of document

I'm working with a document someone else created and I am unable to select
any of the images in the document or the captions for the images, which
appear to be written in text boxes. I tried to get around this with Ctrl-A,
but Word refuses to select all (it's even greyed out on the menu). I also
can't choose to view the footer (one of the images is in the footer).

If I double-click on an image, Word just ignores me and selects the
paragraph closest to the photo. Does anyone have any idea what might be
happening and how I can fix it? The only thing I can think to do is select
the text manually and then insert screenshots of the photos, but this seems a
bit ridiculous.

Thanks.

Hi Becky,

It's always important to tell us which version of Word you're using. That way we
can tell you where to look for things.

So, all i can ask you is: is the document possibly protected? Unless you have
2007, check the Tools/Protect document command.
