"???" in Outlook 'from' field

I have been waiting for Microsoft to correctly display foreign words in the
'from' field of Outlook. The foreign names (i.e. Japanese) appear OK in
Entourage on Mac OS X but Windows Outlooks including Office 2007's all show
just "???". Is there any way to correct this problem?

Hi. Thank you for the tip. However, your answer raised another one. I have no
problem in reading or writing in Japanese in the Text field when I select a
Unicode under the 'View' menu. Question is why the rule or selection of
encoding is not applicable to 'from' and 'Subject' fields. Nobody wants to
setup another account just to make those fields legible.

Sorry for the delayed reply - we had a public holiday here in Japan.

Regarding your question: the message body is usually encoded, either in
Unicode or JIS. Message headers are not usually encoded, at least not by
Outlook. It is therefore that the messages must be handled by a
Unicode-enabled Outlook; otherwise the multibyte characters will fall
apart and display as 'mojibake'.

You do not need to set up a new account; just force Outlook to run in
Unicode mode. If you store your messages in a PST file, it must be in
2003 Unicode format.

Thank you for the continuous support but I need more detailed instruction how
to force Outlook runs in Unicode mode. I used import command to convert .PST
file to default Unicode format but that did not help. I cannot find the way
to invoke 'custom installation wizard'. Our company e-mail server does not
use any Microsoft products. So, any setting should be only on individual PC
level.

You created a new Unicode PST file. If you receive new mail into that
PST file, does it now display the Subject data correctly? If not, use
the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) to force Unicode mode. For Outlook
2007 use Google to search for the outlk12.adm download location.

Importing from an non-Unicode PST file will *not* fix broken Subject and
other header data.

More problems!!!
When I tried to run the 'Admin Tempplate.exe' on Vista RC2 I got an error
message saying that I need to use /EXTRACT command to expand the file. But I
found, after several attempts, that 2K, Xp and Vista do not have such Dos
command. When I used expand service on XP Msconfig, I got "one or more of the
fields is empty. All of the fields must have values before expanding". What
is going on?

Why your programer is not able to add a selectable option for encoding of
title field for Ansi/Unicode? Compared with Mac OS it is so complicated!!

Is there any problem to use Unicode for default settings?

I don't know who "your programer" is. I also don't know Mac OS, Windows
Vista, or Outlook 2007. I also never heard of an EXTRACT command (the
slash looks like a command option rather than a command).

It took me 5 minutes to enable Unicode mode under Windows XP for Outlook
2003. I cannot advise you on Vista and 2007.

Thank you for your encouragement. I have an interesting result. For Outlook
2007 on Vista, just importing the old .pst file solved problem. I am
wondering whether or not I can simply copy the file to XP. Have you try
downloading the template? I really do not understand why I got strange
responses from both Vista and XP when I tried to install 'Admin
Tempplate.exe'.
