In Outlook BCM, tasks should automatically link to contact

When I create a task from a business contact screen in Business Contact
Manager, the "contact" is not automatically filled into the contact link at
the bottom of the page. It has always done that from an outlook contact, why
not from a BCM contact?

Because BCM doesn't have the same functionality as Outlook contacts. You can
add the contact link manually.

Maybe this reply will help.

Outlook and BCM are 2 separate applications intended to share the same user
interface and various object items that are native to both applications.
Outlook data resides either in .pst folders or exchange folders. BCM data
resides in the separate MSDE database. This affects how you have to go about
"fully-linking" different items among these 2 programs depending upon what
you are trying to do. The task record is native to the Outlook application
so when you create a new task from within a Business Contact Record you are
unfortunately creating only a 1 way link FROM the native BCM item (Business
Contact, Account, Opportunity) TO the native Outlook item (Task, Appointment).
This 1 way only link will be displayed in the BCM record history area of the
BCM record and you can also see this 1 way link by clicking on the "link to
record" button on the tool bar of the linked native Outlook items. In order
to effectively create a full "2-way link" that allows for easy navigation
back and forth between native BCM and native Outlook items you have to
manually do this by clicking on the Contacts field selection button in the
lower left of each native Outlook item to create this reverse link bridge
FROM the native Outlook item back TO the native BCM item. From an intended
workflow perspective, I believe the designers of BCM were a bit limited in
their assumptions about how users would normally need to link various items.
One of my biggest critiques of BCM has been the apparent lack of empathy in
its design with respect to normal needs of the real-life end user. Maybe my
comments are a bit over explaining here but it helps to understand the why
behind the various linking requirements and limitations as they currently
exist between these 2 separate programs.

Understanding WHY this exists though does not excuse the fact that Outlook
and BCM should be a lot more seamless in this regard. I too wish that there
wasn't an additional manual procedure required in the native Outlook item in
order to effect a 2 way bridge to more easily navigate between items. More
seamless automation of this sort of thing would be most welcome in future
versions of BCM.
