Improving Win98SE's USB compatibility?

F

fitwell

Months ago I switched over to Windows 2000 since I had 2 programs that
don't work in Win98SE. Well, I'm fed up with Win2K. I've given it
enough chances. Even with sp4, it's a pain in the butt, like XP,
versus Win98SE. When the computer is a sinle user home PC, Win98SE is
just so much easier to maintain. However, one thing that it has over
Win98SE is how easy it is to use USB-driven devices with it.

I'll partition the C drive and add Win2K to that for those 2 programs,
but I'll go back to using Win98SE mainly. But was wondering since
Win2K is easier re USB if there wasn't some sort of program to give
Win98SE enhanced ability to more easily interface with it? Since the
difference is just a software one obviously (vs. a hardware-related
one), hoping that someone knows of something here.

This is an issue due to one thing - my MP3 player which I have
connected to PC via USB hub. Not worth staying mainly with Win2K just
for that, though, and hoping that I don't have ot toggle back and
forth every day between OSs just because of the player. I rarely need
the 2 programs that run on Win2K so those won't be a daily issue.

Anyway, TIA. :blush:D

check the motherboard or chipset website for drivers
or get a usb card and hope it works with updated drivers on an old machine
(60/40 against )

better value to get an auction $180 1.8 gig xppro machine and network it as
a 6 usb port expansion module :)

You need some drivers, specifically written for Windows 98. I was lucky
and found some with a TrekStor USB stick (I think it was that device,
if not, it was the Praktica DCZ 4.0 camera) with a CDrom that provided
all purpose USB drivers, which work quite well on my old Windows 98
*first edition* machine.

But without drivers, nothing will work.

You can try (find the above) at: http://www.mdgx.com/
Good luck.

What you need is what I use with 98SE and that is a generic USB driver
that works with any USB flash drive. Look for JDUSBMS. If you can't
find it, leave a working email address and I'll email it to.

Thanks everyone for the help! Much appreciated.

I'll try to find this. I didn't have time this weekend to reformat
the drive and install Win98SE again so probably will only be able to
do next weekend, but looking forward to having that back. And if I
can get better USB functionality, I'll be perfectly happy. :blush:D

I have no idea which I should use, or should I get all of these
somehow? I have no idea how to decide myself <g>, as I have little
experience with this type of thing.

What does anyone recommend?

Hopefully they'll be easy to find though I'm sure it'll take some
digging and lots of hours. It's just to know if I have to get all of
these or not. (I have been lax in this regard, I have no service
packs for Win98SE due to a couple of bad experiences a couple of years
ago.)

Thanks.

hmmm, I think
Unofficial Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2 (SP2) [16.6 MB, free]
and
Unofficial Windows 98/98 SE Upgrade Pack (WUPG) [24 MB, free]

would do.

And maybe there is something special for you in

You can also leave the Installer, and using the files in the archive
(updates) seperately.

They are all standard-MS updates, so far I know. Using the Installer
might give you some features (the sp-maker did) you did not want. As I
have met so :-(

But I changed with that specific PC to DOS/NT, leaving that desastrous
WIN9x/ME :) (I have tried once again :), bez I would like to see the
DOS 7.10 of Win98SE. But after a crash in DOS I changed to DOS ;-))

JDUSBMS is the file name for the Lexar JumpDrive drivers; which are hardly
generic.

Ah, well that's good to know. However, it's great to pass along this
info but even better is to perhaps give an idea of one that _is_
generic (?) <g>.

Thanks. :blush:D

Sorry about that and thanks for the heads-up.

My IP-number is not static, but just for tonight if you happen to check
in again soon you can hopefully get it from me:
<ftp://guest:p[email protected]/Pub/USB%20Mass%20Storage.zip>

(There is nothing else on the server but that file.)

If someone with a more permanent site want to grab it and make it
available for fitwell [and others], go ahead.

Else post back with a decodable e-mail address and i'll send it to you.

Ah, well that's good to know. However, it's great to pass along this
info but even better is to perhaps give an idea of one that _is_
generic (?) <g>.

Since the driver has to be written to handle the specific hardware,
there's no such thing as a generic driver. Some hardware, like USB
converters, are so generic as far as the hardware is concerned, that
most drivers can be used with most hardware. But if there's truly a
"generic" driver (like the hard drive driver or the VGA driver), it's
included in Windows, not supplied by the manufacturer.
