Importing video from DVD

Hi
I am new to Movie Maker 2.1 but I am very impressed with what it has done so
far.
I've been reading the posts here and have started using Photo Story 3 for
the panning and zooming effects.

I have several DVD's I have created on a Sony RDR-GX7 by connecting a Sony
HC40 via firewire. This was before having a pc. Now I would like to import
those dvds to Movie Maker 2.1 and Photo Story 3.

I'm using a Dell XPS but I didn't know enough to make sure I included
firewire connections for the Camcorder. I have plenty of USB ports, but no
firewire. That's something I'll have to add in order to use video from the
camcorder. But right now I would like to work with the dvds I have.

The pc does have a dvd-rom and a Nec dvd-rw 9 drive.

What I am wanting to do is import the dvds I created from the dv tapes and
add video effects and transitions to them and use the video to create new
Music videos from them. I have no interest in ripping commercial dvds to my
hard drive, just my own dvds from my own videos and home movies.

I've been reading the posts about renaming the .vob files with TMPGEnc, but
I get lost before I even get started.

I read about DVD Decrypter and being able to import the files to Movie
Maker, but from what I can see, it's no longer available.

Is there a way that someone, who is so new to all this, could understand and
be able to use the video I burned to dvd?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you for the reply and the website recommended.
I searched through the How to category:How to convert to
AVI/DivX/XviD/WMV/MKV/OGM/MP4 but found no guides for .VOB

I then looked in Format Conversion: found "VOB to AVI " but nothing came up.
Am I looking for the right conversion guide that I need to be able to import
the dvds I have?

I tried the same search and your right using "VOB to AVI" didn't work.
Once your done with Papajohn's website if you still need help go back to
video.com and use the "VOB to" search. With that one I got several hits.

Hi there....whenever, I want to rip a prior dvd that I've made, I use AVS
Converter.
You can find it at www.avsmedia.com Click on Avs Converter when you
get there...you can try it...and if you buy it the cost is $29.95. It has
many uses for
converting. Its fairly easy to use....put your dvd in your drive....open
up avs converter.... in the import area browse to the vob in your dvd drive
that you want to bring into your computer.....in the next area down you find
a place to put the converted video file on your computer....and the last area
is where the format you want is determined. You can click up above for avi,
wmv, mpeg, etc etc....I mostly use xvid and divx at high quality....Movie
Maker doesn't always get along with mpegs.
There are lots of solutions to problems, just thought i'd give you how i've
solved mine! Good luck.

also worth noting, While windows moviemaker will not import .vob files,
windows media encoder will. (and is free)

And you get what you pay for.
I agree with dickmr I use AVS Converter for most of my conversions and it is
worth the money simply because I don't get the audio/video sync problems
that I often do with media encoder.
I guess the point is that there's more than one solution to most problems
and none of those solutions are "worth nothing" :)

I agree AVS converter is a great program. I was just offering another
alternative.
