Importing .pst file

Have reinstalled HD and trying to import .pst files. I go through the wizard
and in the click before finish, the imported Personal; Folder shows in the
folder list. On hitting finish however it disappears. Whats happening?

Do not import. Open your old PST with File>Open>Outlook Data File (or
Personal Folders File, depending on version).

For some reason the archive and personal .pst files are 30 -40 kb each, and
theres nothing there!

Then apparently whatever method you used to backup/copy these files has
caused corruption
You are sure you are opening the correct files?

I used the import/export wizard and saved them on the D: partition

That's the usual way to a corrupt file - have you got access to the original
HDD?

It's been reformatted and reinstalled with Windows.

Any chance of using recovery software?

Probably not.

Why people believe they can only save their .pst file by importing/exporting
is the 9th wonder of the world. What happens to simple logic where saving
the .pst file is the last thing anyone thinks of for preserving their .pst
file? It works with Word files, Excel files, program installation files,
but when it comes to saving a .pst file, a chicken must be sacrificed,
virgins defiled, dancing around beltane fires must be completed, and bodily
tattoes must be scrived.

Sounds like fun!

Import and export are what you do to convert to another file format.
You have no need to convert to another file format.
All you needed to do is copy your Outlook Data File.

In MIE import and export are to input and export your most used information.
It seemed natural that they served the same purpose in Outlook.

Import/export is there in the menu. Why should I ever know there's
any other way?

Just as you don't import a Word document into the Word application and just
as you don't imoprt a spreadsheet into Excel because the files are native to
those applications, so too you don't import a native Outlook file like a PST
into Outlook.
