Yes, there is! DAT files are just delimited text files,
and if Excel can open them so can Access.
With your database open, go to menu File > Get External
Data > Import and in the File name box type *.*, so it
will display all document types, or *.DAT, so it will
display just the DAT files. Locate your file and then
follow the text import wizzard instructions. If you
experience problems with this try to rename the .DAT file
to .TXT and do your import.
It seems logical but I think i am missing something.
First of all using file, get external data, import just
brings in unreadable data if I tell it that the file is
text and refuses to accept it if I tell it that the file
is Excel.I have tried running a macro but that doesnt
seem to work either.
Any other suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks

It's really funny that Excel can open the file and Access
cannot... can you open regular delimited text files from
Access?
If it's not sensitive data, you might send me a sample
file so I can see if I can help you further (take the
removethisbit part out of the address).
