I would like to move my outlook contacts from an old hard disk to a new
desktop, but cannot find them to export. Can anyone tell me which folder they
are in?
It is Outlook 2003 w/o contack manager.

Firstly, do NOT use the import/export function. There's no need, and causes
untold problems.

I cannot find any .pst files in the old disc drive. I have done a searched as
well as checking manually. Would it be a .dat file that the contacts are
stored?

Did you enable viewing hidden files and folders in WIndows' Folder Options?
Would it be a .dat file that the contacts are stored?

Certainly not. They're in the PST just like all the other Outlook data.

Hello,

is it possible to import the list of contacts created in MS Excel? We used
for our purpose such list and now I would like to transfer these data into MS
Outlook into shared contacts database.

OK I have found the .pst file in the old hard drive. When I try to copy it
into the equivalent folder in my new hard drive it asks do I want to replace?
I'm not sure that I do. Is it possible to have two .pst files, using one as
default?

NEVER overwrite one PST with another. Copy the PST from the old hard drive
to some other folder. Open it from within Outlook with File>Open>Outlook
Data File. Yes it's possible to have two (or 50) PSTs open at one time and
one of them will be the default - whichever one you tell Outlook to use as
such.

I appreciate your help on this Brian.
I'm afraid whenever I try to open the pst file as you suggested outlook has
to close. no explanation, just encountered an error. I've tried opening the
pst from a saved source on C drive as well as from the old hard drive
connected by an ide adapter.
any suggestions?

Have you tried starting with a new mail profile?

I just tried this, but have had no luck.
Should the mail profile be the same as that which created the pst file on
the old hard drive?

Please describe in detail what "no luck" means.
Should the mail profile be the same as that which created the pst
file on the old hard drive?

You can name the new mail profile anything you wish.

Locate the msmapi32.dll file (it's in
%CommonProgramFiles%\System\MSMAPI\1033 on English language Windows systems)
and rename it. Restart Outlook.
