I am having an issue importing some Dbase ver III/IV files into Microsoft
Access. I am able to open the .dbf file in Excel and view all the data
properly but when I try to link/import the dbase table into access, I receive
"External Table is not in the expected format" How if it opens in Excel is
it not recognized in Access?

I am using Access 2007 beta2, and just to mention I tried the same thing in
Access 2003, and receive the same error.

MS Access 97 has the ability of importing/linking with Dbase files very well.
Since Access 2000 (and later ?), the ability has lost. You (and me) can
import/link only DBF files which have no MEMO field(s) ! The message
"External Table is not in the expected format" happen when the DBF file(s)
have a MEMO field. When you link/import these DBF files to Excel, you won't
see these memo field ...
To sovle this prolem, firstly copy the DBF file to another DBF file without
MEMO field (using Dbase program, Ex. Foxpro), then import that file to MS
Access. Or you may export the DBF file to Excel or Text files ... , then
import these files to MS Access.
Good luck.

Thanks for your response. It is good to know why I am not able to import
/link these tables, but because of this problem with the importer, I cannot
"link" the table I wanted to. Hopefully someone from Microsoft will see this
thread and maybe fix this import /linking issue in the final version of 2007.

Thanks for your help

Joel
