Import Flat Text File Via Macro into Access

Hello,

I am trying to import reports from a code parser. The
reports are saved with an .xls file extension, but they
are nothing more than flat text files which appear to be
excel documents. They do not contain any formating native
to excel. The manual process needed to bring the data
into access normally takes days. I was wondering if there
was a way to import each file into access via a macro. I
am familiar with using macros to import normal excel or
text files into access, but whenever I try to import these
files as either spredsheet or text I get error messages
such as external table is not in the specified format or
the microsoft jet database engine could not find the
object and cannot update. database or object is read-only

Any help would be appreciated

Are you able to import the file ok if you change the file extension to .txt before you import it? Give that a try, if that still gives you errors then the file must have other issues.

Yes, if I change te file to text or I save it as a true
excel file I can import it then. But the the group
assigning this project would like to find a way to import
the flat text file without changing the file extension or
saving it as a true excel file. The reason for this is
that there are several dozen files which have to be
imported and changing files extensions would require a
change in the code parser which would require extensive
programming

Thank You
