Import/Export

I recently reinstalled Office 2003. In Access, when I try to import
external data, I am only offered the choice of
Microsoft Office Access
Windows Sharepoint Services
XML
ODBC Databases

No Outlook, txt, csv, Excel etc., which are the ones I need.

I read somewhere that there are two kinds of import drivers: built-in
and ODBC. The built-in ones seem to include the ones I need.

How can I install these drivers (or otherwise enable the kind of
import I need)?

Does it have something to do with Jet 4.0? There was a message about
it when I first ran Access after the install that I did not act on.

Perhaps you didnt install all options for access, during the Office install,
eg tools/converters etc

You need to run Office update also

IMO, if you are using Access 2003 and don't have Jet 4.0 Service pack 8
installed (the message you didn't act on), then you shouldn't bother using
Access 2003.

The list of things that MS admits can go wrong if you don't is scary enough.
I hesitate to think about how long the real list is:

If Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 is not installed:
- Wizards and builders may not start
- Switchboards created by Swithboard Manager will fail
- The RunCode macro Action for calling VBA procedures will fail
- Event handlers that call VBA functions will fail
- VBA procedures called from a property sheet or used in a SQL statement
will fail
- Filtering on a hyperlink field will fail
- Some VBA functions called from a property sheet or used in a SQL statement
will fail

Note: Get External Data would fall under the Wizards & builders category.
The line between "will not start" and "not work properly" might be very
thin.

I agree. Unfortunately for me, after I downloaded the upgrade and
attempted to install it I got an error message stating that "the
Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are
applying. There is no need to install this update." with no option to
reinstall.

Any ideas?

Other than re-running Office setup in repair mode and/or re-registering the
wizards, I got nothing. Sorry.

To re-register wizards (not your bug, but same file involved and the link
was handy)

Thanks for this. I tried the re-register but it did not solve the
problem. I already tried the reinstall in repair mode and will try
again after the re-register but I'm doubtful.

I brought all this down upon myself because, when trying to uninstall
Office XP prior to installing Office 2003, I was prompted for the
Office XP installation CD. When I put it in, I got a message telling
me the required .mis file wasn't there. Googled the problem and found
this suggestion on one of the "expert" sites: manually delete the
Office XP folder and whack a bunch of registry keys (don't remember
which). Something tells me that's where I went wrong. Looks like I'm
going to have to suffer the excruciating pain of a clean reinstall of
everything--especially excruciating because I'm facing a deadline.

hmm. Running a registry cleaner (to lose any remaining orphans) before
trying to reinstall/repair Office? Maybe even a repair of Windows itself
first ...?

If you have not disabled, go look at System Restore. If it has a check point
prior to your registry mangling you may be able to restore to that date. The
worst that will happen is that you may still have to do a clean install, but
if it works, you could easily save many hours or even days.
