Import Excel into Access 97

I received the following:
I can't get an excel file to import into access. It takes me to a screen
that says "Microsoft Access has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience." Then it gives me the option to repair my
open database and restart access.

I am unable to duplicate the problem in Access 2000 and so far cannot find
any Knowledge Base documents that relate to this. Can anyone offers any
tips or suggestions?

Microsoft Access cannot import Microsoft Excel 4.0 workbooks (.xlw).
