DBX files are from Outlook Express, not Outlook. If you want to import from
an Outlook PST file I think Outlook has to be installed.

To import an OE message store do the following:

1. Copy the old message store directory to a blank subdirectory on the
machine to which you are importing.
2. Select all the files in the subdirectory and right click on them and go
to Properties and clear any read only attribute.
3. Then go to File | Import | Messages in Windows Mail and choose OE6
format and specify the subdirectory from which you are importing. (Make
sure the path is correct as there is an intermittent bug that can
inaccurately specify the path.)
4. You should then be able to select which folders to import from.

Note that if folders.dbx is not included in the directory of dbx files, then
the import will fail. In such circumstances a 3rd party program (e.g.
www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/) will be needed to extract the messages from the
dbx files in order to import them into Windows Mail.

I have tried all the things mentioned in this post but still cannot locate

match your search". i have dual boot for vista ultimate and xp and copying
mails, address book from OE6 to vista's window mail. checked for the read
only attribute but still no go. please help as some of my other friends also
face the same issue.

Hi, Sumit.

Are you SURE you followed Jim's instructions?

You said you copied "mails, address book from OE6 to vista's window mail".
Jim's instructions were to:
Don't copy them into the new Store Folder you have set up for Vista's
Windows Mail. Copy them into a new folder that you might call something
like "X::\OldDBX", where X: is a volume accessible in Vista by your User
account. And be sure to include the OE6 Folders.dbx file; that file holds
the keys to unlock the other .dbx files. You can use either WinXP or Vista
to create the new folder and to do this initial copy.

Or, as I said in my 1/6/07 post, if the OE6 folder is still accessible from
Vista, don't bother to copy to a new folder. Just go into WM, click File |
Import | Messages... and browse to that folder. But be sure you have given
yourself PERMISSION to see the files in that folder! Also, watch out for
the apparent glitch that causes WM to duplicate the folder name. In other
words, while you are trying to import from X:\Store Folder, WM may be trying
to import from X:\Store Folder\Store Folder - which does not exist. It may
take some fumbling around to get past this hassle; I've forgotten just how I
did it. :^{

The Secret to importing email messages is locating the OE (dbx) files. I
found mine buried in Windows directory. ie
C:\Windows\ApplicationData\Identities\(F0D.......)\Microsoft\OutlookExpress\
This was on a machine with WindowsMe operating system. It is probably
different in XP. Don't export the files from OE, just copy them to a CD or
Flashdrive. I was only left with a small residual problem. The message
folders are imported into "Imported Folder" which I could not delete after
moving the folders into Local Folder directory. I ended up just moving it
out of sight.
Good Luck

Hi, Dale.
The Secret to importing email messages is locating the OE (dbx) files.

That part's easy. Just use Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance, and
look for the Store Folder location. I've forgotten the exact sequence of
clicks in OE, but keep looking; you'll know it when you see it. And that's
where all your .dbx files will be.

After you get the messages into folders under Imported Folder, you can just
drag'n'drop the folders from there to Local Folders | Mail Files. For a few
special folders (Sent Items, Drafts), open Imported Folder | Sent Items,
Select All, and drag the messages into Local Folders | Sent Items, then
delete the imported Sent Items folder. When Imported Folder is empty, just
delete it - or drag it into Deleted Items. You should be able to
<Shift>+<Delete> it to get rid of it entirely. Or set Tools | Options |
Advanced | Maintenance to Empty the Deleted Items folder contents when you
exit WM.

Sorry if you've seen this post on other threads, but I've spending hours
trying to import this Outlook Express 6 mail from my old Win 98 machine.
I've been following everyone's advice to no avail. I tried copying the
folders to Documents
folder, and then creating a temporary directory:

C:\tmp3\IDENTITIES\_DD478780_13F7_11D5_B56F_E0F55\MICROSOFT\OUTLOOK_EXPRESS

Then my desktop:

C:\Users\msb\Desktop\IDENTITIES\_DD478780_13F7_11D5_B56F_E0F55\MICROSOFT\OUTLOOK_EXPRESS

Nothing works. Microsoft Mail fails with that same dreaded message.
I copied these to a CD (since I can't figure out how to network connect to
the old Win 98 machine. When I copied them over, I did notice is while the
..dbx files were read only, but I was able to uncheck that. But the folders
are all read only. And no matter how many times I uncheck and apply (...and
to all subfolders too), it keeps rechecking them as read only. It almost
appears like something has these "locked".

And I'm logged on to my ID that I created when I got this Dell, and I assume
I'm running as Administrator (MSB).

the message that I get is:

"No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running
that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try>
closing applications that may have files open."

It appears that I've done everything I've seen suggested.

Any ideas (other then going back to Win98)?

OK, one more babystep - I created a temporary folder in OE on my old
machine, copied the SENT contents to this folder, copied all the folders over
to the Vista machine, Imported the Temp folder, and copied the contents to
SENT.

Guess I need to do the same with the folders Windows Mail can't process -
WHY I have no clue (other than ANOTHER Microsoft FEATURE!!!!)

OK, PARTIAL success.... I was able to copy the .dbx files directly to my
Desktop so I could see them individually. I ran the import from there, and
it could find them. But selecting all the folders, the import failed
importing 0 messages. Then I tried to import JUST my Inbox and BINGO, it
worked.

But it is still failing to import my SENT folder, or a couple of older
folders (Older in/sent boxes from old ISP services).

Why would it import Inbox successfully, but fail with 0 messages for the
others?

Hi everyone with problems to import mail...
First of all if you can see the old files in the folder their in the
permissions is ok.
When choosing to import and browsing to the folder dont dubble click the
last folder (mostly outlook express)just make a single click and choose open,
otherwise it will be what some already told a dubble path in the end
(...microsoft\outlook express\outlook express) and there is no messages
there:)

Make sure the DBX files are not Read Only.
Is Folders.dbx included?
