Import Data From Excel

Hi all,

I am trying to import a worksheet from Excel. The worksheet has 6 columns
of data and about 2700 rows. The first column contains a 17 digit ID number.
When I import it into Access the original number 78020063061269800 turns
into 7.80200632418871E+16. This is unusable to me. I have tried to format
the column in every available way in Excel, but I wind up with the same
result. On the import in Access the box to change the data type is greyed
out, so I cannot change the way Acces is looking at the field.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

It sounds like you are using the import wizard, and that Access is looking
at the number and deciding to display it in scientific notation. That
doesn't necessarily mean that the number is being STORED that way.

What do you find when you open the table in design view and check the
properties of that field?

Then I recommend that you create a table in Access that has that field as a
text field, and any other constraints you wish imposed. Import your data
from Excel into THAT table, rather than relying on Access' good
intentions...<g>

After encountering this same issue, I went to the Design View of my table and
changed the Data Type from Number to Text. When I reopened my table it was
back in (13-digit) number format and no longer in scientific notation.

In other words, I imported a 13-digit number, saw it in scientific notation,
changed the Data Type to text, and saw the 13-digit number.
