Import contacts to update, not replace

Kerry

I have an employee list in Access that our employee's
import into Outlook from the server. Occasionally,
employees are added and/or info changes. Re-importing
removes any notes or links to journal items or emails
that each user makes in their own Outlook.

How can I setup the import process to compare info from
the Access db and the Contacts folder in Outlook to
replace only the changes/additions from the db without
erasing data in the contacts file that the user has
created?

Short answer to your question - without using custom code to import your
data - there is no generic solution within Outlook that will do what you
need.

Simply being able to update existing contacts is something that our current
product (DataPorter) allows you to do on a field by field basis with or
without user-defined fields and/or custom forms. This solution will
automatically update any field in the contact folder used in the
import(update) mapping structure. It assumes that whatever data from the
database is the most current for the given field since there is no way of
knowing from the "Last Modified Date/Time" in the contact record - which
field(s) was/were actually changed last.
