I would think that by now, that error would have cleared?

If not login to the web portal,

https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin

and check if you have any large messages, and if so 'deal with them' ?

I don't see a problem statement from you in this thread.
Is "mermaid" the same person as "mrslovemouser"?

If you are sure you are you are entering the correct username and
password, one possible cause for that error is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

I am having the same problem I have recently installed mcafee antivirus
software but have already disabled the e-mail/spam protection. I am using
windows live mail on vista home premium. I get two error messages one says
invalid credentials and the other says login already in progress. I have
already tried to delete the account and reinstate it twice and the same thing
happens (and yes I have tried turning it off and on again) I have even reset
my password three times. and cleared my cache and all temp files. I have done
a virus/spyware scan. I have 160 gb free space and CPU usage rarely goes
above 40% except on startup. ordinarily i would stick it out and figure
things out for my self but this has me beat and so Any help would be very
much appreciated.

I don't know what your "same problem" refers to. Always describe all the
details of a particular issue.

McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes a while before symptoms start showing up.
First of all, turn off email scanning in McAfee, although that is seldom sufficient.
Next, delete that email account (because it has been corrupted by McAfee),
restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account.

If the problem continues, the only way you can prove or disprove that
McAfee is the culprit is to uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of overly intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:

I am similarly beat and very frustrated. I too am asked for my user id and
password and when I put in the user id and password that I have used
previously, it does not work; the same error message pops up and I fill in
the info again and again it is rejected and so on. This has been going on for
months now, come and go without warning. But when it is acting up like I
described I don't know what to do. Like right now.

First, test your password by logging in to your provider's webmail.
If that works, it proves you have the correct username and password.
If not, a likely reason for the username/password failing is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a possible quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
