images won't open in IE, but do open in other browsers

I get the following error when I try to open an image on my own web server
using IE -
Access forbidden!
You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either
read-protected or not readable by the server.
If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster
Error 403
I have no problem with the same images in Netscape/Mozilla/Opera browsers,
only in IE. I checked the permissions on the files on the web server, they
are set to 755 (it's a Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP server).

Anyone have any ideas why IE doesn't open the same images that the other
browsers will open?
